goodnight

 the sky is on fire, dripping purple lava:
amber flecks
onyx dust. 
 sunsets fall along charcoal horizons―
outlines,
sketched skies. 
 my pale moon rises, infinity times the night―
a starless void
of mental emotion. 
 the sky is on fire,
burning crimson and embers of the end. 
 dark evening waters extinguish their threats;
their bloodshot battle wounds;
their crackling wreckage. 
 it will one day be found...
but at first dawn. 
 nothing and everything converge
upon jagged boulders,
crashing into the familiar caress
of midnight waves. 
 i am the captain. 
 only the navy canvas,
speckled with glitter
remind me overhead. 
 i am the captain. 
 but who can chart the sky
of moonblips and erratic fire? 
 the mind cannot fathom the stars,
but does that make us tethered,
or release us from wooden anchor? 
 farewell sails into the milky universe: constellations composed of crystal,
comets of garnet and rose,
asteroids implied from earth's crumbling mounds. 
 i cannot follow―
for someone tonight must stay. 
 a new world is upon us,
the new era awaits. 
 but now i stand on solid deck:
staring across the open sea
robed in moonbeams 
 and i breathe out the air of a life i no longer have. 
 cracked lips part,
revealing a signal of both
a tragic end
and beloved beginning. 
goodnight.
