Song Recommendations Based on Your Favorite Type of Romantic Ship

Hello, my voyagers. Today, I wanted to try something a little different. I have a ton of writing playlists. I don’t always use them myself, but I love having them and I want to share them one day (still figuring out how I want to do that). Anyway, I was thinking about what I wanted to post, and I realized that I should just combine my two favorite things: Books and music.

I’ve always wanted to do a post like this, but never really knew exactly what it would be about. So, once this idea struck me, I was super excited. I’m really happy with how it turned out, and I hope that you love it, too.

Without any further ado, please enjoy my Buzzfeed(ish) shenanigans where I recommend you four different songs based on your favorite type of romance ship.

Disclaimer: Songs with explicit lyrics are marked with an asterisk*

The “Falling-For-The-Bad-Boy” Ship

You like the bad boys. You always have, and maybe you always will. Growing up, you probably always gravitated toward the mysterious, brooding boys. You were the good girl, so falling for them was a small rebellion that made you feel human. The boys with sharp edges and gray morality are your weakness, and you love them unashamedly. In a love triangle, you will always choose the questionable one, and sometimes you worry that you’re the only one who sees the good in them. These ships have your heart in a death-grip, but you couldn’t imagine loving anything else.

He’s never gonna change
He’ll never be Prince Charming
He’ll only do you harm again

Devil Doesn’t Bargain by Alec Benjamin

I keep falling for the bad ones (bad ones)
The always-make-me-sad ones (sad ones)
Tryin’ hard to hold my ground

Bad Ones by Tate McRae

Hey, good girl (hey, good girl)
Get out while you can
I know you think you got a good man

Good Girl by Carrie Underwood

But when you said, “Hello”
I know that was the end of it all
I should’ve stayed at home

Break My Heart by Dua Lipa

The “Fluffy-Rom-Com” Ship

You love the fluff. You thrive on those fictional couples who run around their small town just dreaming of escaping and becoming somebody someday. Your favorite couples are the ones that feel like a montage of summer adventures and nostalgia. You don’t know if it’s because you grew up too quickly or if you simply long for a main character life, but you love reading about young adults simply figuring out life. While others want spice, you’re content with coming-of-age stories full of angst, domestic moments, and early morning cuddles.

I don’t know where I’m falling to
Heartbeats are blinking they go right past
But I know that one thing I need is you

Won’t Ever Let You Go by Zayde Wolf

The story of my life, I take her home
I drive all night to keep her warm
And time is frozen (the story of, the story of)

Story of My Life by One Direction

I can’t let you go now that I got it
And all I need is to be struck
By your electric love

Electric Love by BORNS

I used to be so tough
Never really gave enough
And then you caught my eye

Somebody To You by The Vamps ft. Demi Lovato

The “Best-Friends-To-Lovers” Ship

You grew up on the best-friends-to-lovers ship, and you’re still secretly hoping it’ll happen to you. If they’ve been best friends since childhood, you’re already in love. Contemporary romance is probably your go-to genre, especially if it’s set in the summer. Coming-of-age stories hit you hard for some reason, and you will always smile when the characters finally figure out that their feelings have changed. Ultimately, you cannot think of anything better than falling in love with your best friend.

It makes no sense ’cause we’re fighting over what we do
And there’s no way that I’ll end up being with you
But friends don’t look at friends that way

That Way by Tate McRae

Baby, I am right here
But you’ll never be alone
I’ll be with you from dusk till dawn

Dusk Till Dawn by ZAYN ft. Sia

Standing by and waiting at your backdoor
All this time how could you not know, baby?
You belong with me

You Belong With Me (Taylor’s Version) by Taylor Swift

‘Cause this love is only gettin’ stronger
So, I don’t wanna wait any longer
I just wanna tell the world that you’re mine, girl, oh

They Don’t Know About Us by One Direction

The “In-Love-With-Someone-You-Can’t-Have” Ship

When you say that you like forbidden romance, you usually feel a need to clarify that you don’t mean cheating. No, you mean the stories where they are betrothed to another, duty comes first, or they are on different sides of the same war. Your heart belongs to the couples who love recklessly and would risk death a million times for a single perfect moment. You never thought Romeo and Juliet was overrated, but you’re tired of trying to convince others, so now you hold it like your own forbidden secret.

I wish I could make the time stop
So we could forget everything and everyone
I wish that the time would line up

There’s No Way by Lauv and Julie Michaels

It’ll probably take me years to get over
Even the hurt, yeah I know that it’s worth
All the years it’ll take for me to get over you, you

Years by Astrid S

And all I gave you is gone
Tumble like it was stone
Thought we built a dynasty that heaven couldn’t shake

Dynasty by MIIA

And you know damn well
For you, I would ruin myself
A million little times

Illicit Affairs by Taylor Swift

The “Sick-Kids-In-Love” Ship

You love a sad story. A lot of people think it’s weird, but you can’t explain just how much you love these couples. These books are probably the ones you buy without knowing anything else about them. In the end, you’re okay with a sad story because, to you, it was real. These couples found love, and even if it didn’t last, it changed you for the better.

Everything falls into place
Just please don’t say you love me,
Cause I might not say it back

Please Don’t Say You Love Me by Gabrielle Aplin

And I hear your ship is comin’ in
Your tears a sea for me to swim
And I hear a storm is comin’ in

Anchor by Novo Amor

So what should I do in the darkness of you
When you light up my moon from July until June?
What would I do if there wasn’t a you?

Yellow Lights by Harry Hudson

I put the record on
Wait ’til I hear our song
Every night I’m dancing with your ghost

Dancing With Your Ghost by Sasha Alex Sloane

The “Enemies-To-Lovers” Ship

You will never stop screaming about this ship. You love every variation of it, and you most certainly have opinions about which authors did it right. You have an endless list of book recommendations for this ship, and you definitely have a Goodreads list for it. You also probably go absolutely feral over dark academia stories that include academic-rivals-to-lovers.

I would hold you down if I could
Make you the enemy
I would let you down

Enemy by Andrew Belle

What a wicked game to play
To make me feel this way
What a wicked thing to do

Wicked Game by Ursine Vulpine ft. Annaca

It turned into something bigger
Somewhere in the haze, got a sense I’d been betrayed
Your finger on my hair pin triggers

The Great War by Taylor Swift

And now all this time is passing by
But I still can’t seem to tell you why
It hurts me every time I see you

I Hate You, I Love You by Gnash ft. Olivia O’Brien*

The “Everyone-Knows-It’s-Toxic” Ship

You were 100% obsessed with Jade and Beck from Victorious as a kid. You know that they aren’t a healthy ship, but to be perfectly honest, that’s why you love them. They are meant to be addictive and make you root for them, even though you know the entire relationship is one giant red flag. You would never support these relationships in real life, but since it’s fiction, you don’t mind it. That being said, you aren’t a fan of the truly abusive relationships, especially if they are portrayed in a positive way.

I know that dress is karma, perfume regret
You got me thinking ’bout when you were mine, oh
And now I’m all up on ya, what you expect?

Attention by Charlie Puth

Is it easier to stay? Is it easier to go?
I don’t wanna know, oh
But I know that I’m never, ever gonna change

Easier by 5 Seconds of Summer

Every time that I swear it’s over
It makes you want me even more
You pull away and I come in closer

Hurts So Good by Astrid S

For you, I would cross the line
I would waste my time
I would lose my mind

Don’t Blame Me by Taylor Swift

The “Hopelessly-In-Love-But-Can’t-Admit-It” Ship

You absolutely thrive on angst and accidental, but innocent, touches. If it’s not a slow-burn where they can’t bring themselves to admit their feelings until 50k words in, then you don’t want it. Insta-love is your arch enemy, and you are the biggest fan of “she fell first, but he fell harder” couples. You probably enjoy historical romances, but you’ll fall in love with any book that has this ship. You probably aren’t a fan of sexy scenes, and you go feral when both of the people in the ship don’t feel worthy of love, so they can’t see that it’s been there all along.

I wouldn’t answer the door at 3 a.m.
No, I wouldn’t, no
But I would for you

I Would For You by Lauren Duski

I was enchanted to meet you
Please don’t be in love with someone else
Please don’t have somebody waiting on you

Enchanted by Taylor Swift

I’m tryin’ to make it better piece by piece
Little do you know I
I love you ’til the sun dies

Little Do You Know by Alex & Sierra

Goin’ all out for each other
We can make it last forever
I’m gonna love you ’til my heart stops beating

Heart Stops Beating by Joshua Micah

My four year blogoversary is coming up in June. I have no idea how it’s already been almost four years, but I am very excited to celebrate with you. That being said, I need your help! Instagram and Twitter helped me narrow it down to two options for what I should post that day, but I figure you all should get the final say since you’re the ones who are actively reading this blog. *throws confetti because special voyager privileges* So, if you’re interested in helping a girl out, please vote below for the option that you want to see me do to celebrate our four years together!

Bree Dawn is a voracious book dragon who believes in the power of stories. As a young girl, she always begged her parents to let her read “one more chapter” before bedtime. As an adult, she uses this same passion to craft dark stories with hopeful undertones for young adults who seek a glimmer of light in this dark world. Bree is currently working on her dystopian fantasy novel while consuming as many stories as possible.
